How to Get an ITIN
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) is a 9-digit number from the IRS for people who need to file U.S. taxes but don't have and can't get a Social Security number. It's used only for tax purposes.
How It Works
Fill out Form W-7
This is the official IRS application for an ITIN. Every person applying, including a spouse or dependents, needs their own completed Form W-7.
Gather your documents
You'll need original identity documents or certified copies, most commonly a passport. A driver's license, foreign ID, or birth certificate can also work depending on your situation.
Attach your tax return
In most cases, Form W-7 must be submitted together with a completed federal tax return. Leave the Social Security number field blank; the IRS fills in the new ITIN once it's assigned.
Submit it
Mail everything to the IRS ITIN Operation in Austin, TX, or apply in person through an IRS Taxpayer Assistance Center or a Certified Acceptance Agent, who can help verify your documents so you don't have to mail original IDs.
Ask us when you book your appointment; many VITA sites, including ours, can help prepare your return and Form W-7 together in one visit.
