Replace a Social Security Card
If you lost your card, you may not even need a new one; just knowing your Social Security number is usually enough. But if you do need a physical replacement card, here's how.
How It Works
Check if you can apply online
Visit the SSA's "Replace Social Security Card" page. It asks a few quick questions to see if you qualify to apply online.
Sign in or create a "my Social Security" account
You'll need a U.S. mailing address and a driver's license or state ID from a participating state (most states participate).
Submit your request
If you qualify, no documents need to be uploaded. Your new card arrives by mail in about 10 to 14 business days.
If you don't qualify online
You'll need to visit a local Social Security office. Call 800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment, and bring proof of identity.
Good to know: Your Social Security number itself never changes, a replacement card just has the same number printed again. You're allowed up to 3 replacement cards per year and 10 in your lifetime.
