How to Get a Tax Transcript
A tax transcript is a free summary of a past tax return from the IRS. Landlords, lenders, and schools often ask for one. It's different from a full copy of your return, and it's free.
How to Get One Online (Fastest)
Go to the IRS website
Visit the IRS "Get Transcript" page and choose "Get Transcript Online."
Verify your identity
You'll sign in or create an ID.me account. First-time setup takes about 10-20 minutes and needs a photo ID and a phone or computer with a camera.
Pick your transcript type
Most people want the "Tax Return Transcript." Choose the year you need.
Download it
View, print, or save it right away as a PDF.
No Computer or ID.me Trouble? Use Mail Instead
Call the IRS automated phone line at 800-908-9946, or use "Get Transcript by Mail" on the same IRS page. You'll need your Social Security number and the mailing address from your last tax return. It arrives in 5 to 10 days, and no ID.me account is needed.
Important: Transcripts Have a Limit
The transcript you get online or by mail is masked, meaning it hides part of your Social Security number and your employer's information. That's perfect for showing a landlord or lender your income.
But it's not enough to actually prepare or e-file a tax return if you're missing your W-2 or 1099. For that, you need a special version called an unmasked Wage and Income Transcript. You can request this yourself by calling the IRS or visiting a Taxpayer Assistance Center in person; just explain that you need it to prepare a tax return.
